The feud between the ALP and ALP Inc.
ended up affecting the 2000 Arizona Libertarian Presidential election.
In the same time period of the lawsuit the National Libertarian Party decide to dump the Arizona Libertarian Party (ALP) and go with Arizona Libertarian Party Incorporated (ALP Inc.) as the local group that they wanted to represent them in Arizona. Of course this violated the contract that the national LP had with the ALP which said they could only dump ALP for just cause. As a result of the feud between ALP, ALP Inc. and the National Libertarian Party, ALP decided to dump the National Libertarian Parties Presidential candidate who was Harry Browne and place L. Neil Smith on the Arizona’s Libertarian Presidential ballot along with Vin Suprynowicz as a Vice Presidential candidate. I don’t remember all the details but I think that ALP Inc. and the National Libertarian Party again sued ALP and tried to force us to put Harry Browne on their ballot. They lost the lawsuit and Harry Browne was on the ballot in every state of the Union except Arizona as the Libertarian Presidential candidate. And of course in Arizona we had L. Neil Smith as our Presidential candidate along with Vin Suprynowicz as the VP candidate. On this web page at the Arizona Secretary of States office they list the Arizona 2000 candidates for President, which L. Neil Smith is the Libertarian candidate. In Presidential elections, you don't get to vote for the candidate, but instead vote for the electors that promise to support that candidate. That is what the Electors are LibertarianOn this web page which is a pdf file from the Arizona Secretary of States office they list the results of the Arizona 2000 Presidential election. While L. Neil Smith didn't win Arizona election he did get 5,775 votes. I made a copy of the file and placed it here. L. Neil Smith, President 5,775If you go to this web site you will see that there were TWO Libertarian candidates in the 2000 Presidential election. L. Neil Smith was the candidate from Arizona, while Harry Brown was the Libertarian candidate from the other 49 states. At this site you will have to click on a the (+) in labeled "Other (+)" to see L. Neil Smiths name. At this site you will see that L Neil Smith got 5,775 votes as the Libertarian candidate from Arizona. While Harry Browne who was the Libertarian candidate from the other 49 states got 384,516 votes. The data from this site is: |

As a result of this disaster I believe that the Peter Schmerl's ALP Inc
changed their bylaws to require that the ALP Inc. put on the Arizona
Presidential election ballot the candidate that is supported by the National Libertarian party.
Of course I think that is really stupid. What if ALP Inc. someday starts feuding with the National Libertarian Party again. In that case they will probably want to put a Presidential candidate on the Arizona ballot that WE support even if the National LP doesn't support our Presidential candidate. |
